Checkout with Visa Crypto Pay (VCP)

At Visa, I designed Visa Crypto Pay (VCP) is a crypto payment solution designed to function like PayPal or Google Pay but tailored for cryptocurrency.

Project introduction

Visa Crypto Pay (VCP) is a payment checkout solution similar to PayPal or Google Pay but tailored for cryptocurrency. VCP allows users to create a centralized Visa account, link multiple crypto wallets, and use it as a payment option alongside traditional methods at checkout.

The project’s goal was to address the challenges of trust, security, and usability in crypto transactions, creating a seamless and secure payment experience for users across varying levels of crypto expertise.

My team

  • My role involved discovery, user research, journey mapping, creating personas, wire-framing, low to hi-fidelity designs, presentations, prototyping, user testing, dev hand-off

  • In collaboration with 2 product designers, product & engineering partners

Discovery & user research

My team and I collaborated with user research to conduct 40 moderated 1-hour interviews on UserTesting.com, prioritizing a diverse range of participants with varying demographics to offer a global perspective on crypto adoption and user behavior.

I also worked collaboratively with product managers to understand how our clients’ needs and goals with a dashboard product. We gathered market research and product workflows to analyze existing checkout flows currently in use.

Through user research, we identified major pain points:

  1. Lack of trust and security: Apprehension about the security of their assets and potential loss of funds

  2. Complex, technical journey: Crypto payment journeys are not intuitive and feel overly technical and risky to new users

  3. Fragmented wallet experience: Advanced users manage multiple crypto wallets from different providers. Connecting these wallets to websites for purchases is often a cumbersome and inconsistent process

  4. Limited availability: Crypto options and usage are limited on mainstream e-commerce platforms

Example of current crypto checkout using a QR code and external integrations.

Project goals

The goal was to create Visa Crypto Pay (VCP) as a seamless checkout option integrated alongside traditional payment methods. Key features and goals include:

  • Trust & security: Build a sense of trust, security associated with Visa & traditional banking for crypto payments

  • Crypto for all: Simplify the crypto payment process & make it less technical

  • Merchants & crypto: Integrate crypto & VCP as a checkout option alongside existing fiat payment methods.

Process & Collaboration

The design of this dashboard was a complex and highly collaborative process. We worked closely with product managers to define the project’s scope, ensuring alignment with both user and business goals. Throughout the project, we collaborated extensively with software engineers to understand technical feasibility and limitations. We also considered the integration of payment, transactional, and account management systems into the centralized VCP design.

Regular design critiques and syncs with stakeholders allowed us to gather feedback and refine the experience based on insights from multiple perspectives. We followed an iterative design loop, consistently ideating, prototyping, and adjusting the interface to address both technical and user experience needs.

Outcome

Using Figma, I developed a high-fidelity prototype for both mobile and web that showcased:

  • The onboarding process for creating a VCP account.

  • Wallet linking flows with third-party providers.

  • The seamless checkout experience, allowing users to select crypto wallets as payment options.

The project culminated in a functional prototype ready for development. Key achievements included:

  • A design that addresses trust concerns with clear, transparent payment flows.

  • A streamlined wallet linking experience for advanced users.

  • Positive feedback from stakeholders and test users, validating the solution’s potential impact.

I look forward to answering any questions and discussing my project in more depth!
